Field Day Highlights Practical Pathways to More Resilient Grazing Landscapes

Producers and industry experts came together at Hazeldean, home to Leather Cattle Co, for BMRG’s Integrated Landscape Management Field Day.

Hosted by Leather Cattle Co, the day combined practical presentations with a guided property tour, giving participants the opportunity to see how grazing management, landscape restoration and Natural Sequence Farming can work together to improve landscape function and build resilience over time.

A key focus was the connection between healthy landscapes and stronger grazing businesses. Better soil health, groundcover, water retention and vegetation can help improve productivity and profitability, while also reducing erosion, nutrient loss and runoff. These improvements can make grazing systems more resilient, particularly through dry conditions and periods of climate variability.

The field day also explored the growing role of natural capital in farm planning and decision making. By better understanding and managing assets such as soil, water, vegetation and biodiversity, producers can identify opportunities to strengthen their businesses while also exploring emerging environmental market opportunities.

With insights from Andrew Zerner, Dr Rachael Marshall, Dr Matt Taylor and Stuart Andrews, the day provided a practical look at how natural capital, sustainable grazing and landscape restoration can support both healthier country and more resilient farm businesses.

The key takeaway was simple: good landscape management is not separate from good business management - the two go hand in hand.
