We are thrilled to introduce the Burnett Mary Regional Reef Water Quality Strategy - a dynamic framework dedicated to safeguarding the Great Barrier Reef, one of Australia's most iconic treasures. Supported by the Australian Government's Reef Trust, this strategy focuses on reducing fine sediment and pollutant loads across key river basins, including Baffle Creek, Kolan, Burnett, Burrum, and Mary. By integrating cutting-edge science, Traditional Owner knowledge, and stakeholder collaboration, it aims to prevent 18,000 tonnes of annual fine sediment delivery to the Reef by 2030, aligning with Reef 2050 goals.
- Erosion risk analysis
- Invasive species management
- Climate resilience
- Wetland restoration
Drawing on the latest insights from the 2021-2022 Reef Report Card and the 2022 Scientific Consensus Statement, the strategy identifies knowledge gaps and sets a path for continuous improvement.
In a region where agriculture contributes $1.7 billion in annual value, this approach bridges environmental protection with economic vitality. It enhances productivity, builds community resilience, and fosters inclusive stewardship.
