Breakthrough in assessing waterways in the Burnett Mary region

Newsroom 1 min read , July 1, 2025

We're excited to announce a major milestone for our region! The Waterways Assessment Method (AfN-METHOD-W-02) has been formally accredited under the Accounting For Nature® Framework. This achievement exemplifies the collaboration between the Burnett Mary Regional Group (BMRG), Dr. Samantha Capon, Dr. Matt Taylor, and the invaluable support from the Minderoo Foundation.

A powerful tool for environmental assessment

Our new method, co-developed with leading scientists and Traditional Owner partners, will soon be publicly available. It enables robust and repeatable assessments of inland waterway conditions, from project to catchment scale. This method draws on years of applied science, Indigenous knowledge, and ecological monitoring right here in the Burnett Mary region.

Commitment to measurable improvements

BMRG remains dedicated to measurable environmental improvement. The Accounting For Nature® Framework stands as a critical tool for tracking ecosystem conditions, guiding investments, and narrating the full story of our region’s ecological and cultural assets. Our commitment to transparency ensures that we deliver real, data-driven outcomes that foster resilience across landscapes, communities, and economies.

Acknowledgment of support and collaboration

We extend our deepest gratitude to our collaborators and co-authors for their hard work and dedication. Special thanks to the Minderoo Foundation for their generous support, which has been instrumental in the development of this innovative method.

Stay tuned for more updates as we move forward with this exciting initiative. The full method is available here.
