BMRG is inviting landholders across the Burnett Mary region to learn more about the Cool Burn Squad, a local initiative helping producers manage fire in ways that protect farms, landscapes and cultural values.

Fire has always been part of this landscape. The focus isn’t on whether fire occurs, but on how it is used. When applied under the right conditions, planned cool burns can reduce fuel loads, help limit wildfire intensity, improve pasture and ground cover, and support long-term land and biodiversity health.

The Cool Burn Squad works with landholders to plan and deliver low-intensity burns that are practical, safe and suited to local conditions. The program brings together landholders, fire practitioners and land management specialists to ensure burns are carried out with the right preparation and approvals in place.

What participation looks like

This is a targeted program, with a small number of suitable properties selected across the region. Current focus areas include properties around Monto, Gayndah/Mundubbera, the South Burnett, and coastal strip from Bundaberg to Childers.

Properties are carefully assessed for suitability. This may include factors such as fuel loads, vegetation type, access, proximity to assets, and the potential for cool burning to reduce bushfire risk.

The program outlines what landholders can expect, including the development of a Cool Burn Management Plan, support with approvals and permitting, and guidance on how to carry out burns safely while minimising risk to property and neighbours.

Planning for a burn may consider:

  • fire history and landscape features
  • current soil and vegetation conditions
  • seasonal and weather patterns
  • protection of infrastructure, stock and neighbouring properties
  • environmental and cultural values
  • safe burn sizes (up to 10 hectares)

Starts with a conversation

If you’re interested, the first step is simply a discussion. Local knowledge is central to the process, and the Cool Burn Squad will work with you to plan burns that fit your operation, your property priorities and seasonal conditions.

If you would like to explore whether your property may be suitable, please complete the short survey below:
