Conservation Efforts Continue for the Bulberin Nut

Conservation work for the critically endangered Bulberin Nut Macadamia jansenii, continues to advance thanks to the expertise and dedication of Tondoon Botanical Gardens in Gladstone.

On September 16, Joel Cohen, Curator at Tondoon Botanical Gardens, led a hands-on propagation training session, sharing the technical skills required to take and propagate cuttings from this notoriously hard-to-strike species. The session also provided Traditional Owner rangers from Gidarjil Development Corporation with practical experience, supporting local capacity for future propagation aspirations.

Tondoon Botanical Gardens has long been instrumental in the conservation of Macadamia jansenii, maintaining propagation programs that supply cuttings for future plantings and helping secure the survival of this species found only in Bulburin National Park.

These activities form part of the broader Recovery and Resilience of the Bulberin Nut (Macadamia jansenii) Project, funded by the Australian Government’s Saving Native Species Program. Through Tondoon’s ongoing conservation work, research, and on-ground action, the project aims to safeguard protect one of Australia’s rarest and most threatened plants.
