Advancing sustainable grazing in the Burnett Mary region

1 min read , July 24, 2025

In the heart of the Burnett Mary region, collaboration and innovation are flourishing, as local landholders partner with Burnett Mary Regional Group (BMRG) to embrace sustainable agricultural practices. Rex and Jenny Neubecker, esteemed graziers in Dallarnil, recently extended their hospitality to BMRG field officers for an insightful property visit.

The visit facilitated an in-depth land condition assessment and a comprehensive tour, where the Neubeckers shared their forward-thinking farm development plans. These include enhancing paddock rest and rotations, fostering pasture diversity, and improving soil health, all integral components they gained from the RCS 7 Day Grazing for Profit School they completed as part of the program.

A commitment to sustainable grazing

  • Paddock rotation and rest: Aiming to optimise grass growth and contribute to ecosystem resilience.
  • Pasture diversity: Encouraging a variety of plant species to boost soil health and productivity.
  • Soil health improvement: Implementing strategies to enhance soil structure and nutrient content.

These initiatives reflect a broader commitment to long-term agricultural sustainability and environmental stewardship. BMRG, alongside the Neubeckers, is eager to witness the evolving impact of these practices upon their return visit next year.

Collaborative growth

BMRG's partnership with landholders like Rex and Jenny exemplifies the power of co-designed solutions. By integrating Traditional Owner knowledge and scientific insights, we are creating pathways to measurable, positive change.

This project underscores BMRG’s dedication to fostering both environmental and socio-economic resilience across the Burnett Mary landscape. With each collaborative effort, we advance towards a future where environment, economy, and cultural heritage thrive together.

The Empowering Adaptive Graziers project delivered by Burnett Mary Regional Group is part of the $6 million Grazing Practice Change Program funded through the Queensland Government’s Queensland Reef Water Quality Program
