Restoring Blue Gum flats across the Burnett Mary Region

The Burnett Mary Regional Group (BMRG) is delivering a significant landscape-scale restoration effort through the Subtropical Eucalypt Resilience: Restoring Floodplain Forests in Burnett Mary project.

Running from June 2024 to June 2028, this Australian Government-funded initiative focuses on restoring and protecting subtropical eucalypt floodplain forests and woodlands - a threatened ecological community of high environmental and cultural significance.

The project aims to improve ecosystem condition, enhance habitat connectivity, and safeguard biodiversity across the Burnett Mary region, while integrating Traditional Ecological Knowledge with contemporary land management practices.

Since commencement, a range of on-ground activities have been delivered across priority sites, including:

  • A 15-hectare cool burn at St Mary, undertaken in partnership with Kabi Kabi Peoples Aboriginal Corporation (KKPAC), supporting improved land management and ecosystem health
  • Installation of a shelterbelt at a Kandanga property planted out with 400 native tube stock to enhance habitat connectivity and improve environmental and cattle productivity outcomes
  • Removal of 75 feral pigs across 700 hectares at Gindoran, reducing impacts on native vegetation and soil condition
  • More than 45 hectares of targeted weed control across Mount Tom and Torbanlea, treating species including lantana, ochna and giant rat’s tail grass

These coordinated works are addressing key threats such as habitat degradation, invasive species, and altered fire regimes, building a strong foundation for long-term restoration outcomes.

This project is funded through the Australian Government’s Natural Heritage Trust and delivered by BMRG as part of the Commonwealth Regional Delivery Partners panel.
