Thirty-seven producers gathered for BMRG's Building Better Pastures field day, hosted by Catriona and Russell Murdoch, to explore practical strategies for improving pasture productivity, soil health and grazing management.
Damien O'Sullivan from Grazing Solutions presented the results of the Murdochs' multispecies planting trials, discussing the decision-making behind the trial, the establishment process and the positive outcomes achieved. His presentation highlighted how thoughtful planning and species selection can contribute to more productive and resilient pasture systems.
BMRG Soil Microbiologist Rachel Cavallo shared insights into interpreting soil test results, helping producers better understand how to get more value from their soil tests and use the information to make informed management decisions.
Rob Young from EcoInsects spoke about the important role beneficial insects play in healthy grazing systems, with a particular focus on dung beetles. Producers learned how dung beetles improve nutrient cycling, reduce pasture pests and contribute to healthier soils and more productive grazing enterprises.
The field day also provided valuable opportunities for producers to ask questions, share experiences and connect with fellow landholders, reinforcing the value of learning from both industry experts and local producers.
One lucky attendee took home a box of dung beetles, generously donated by EcoInsects as the event's door prize.
By bringing together producers, industry specialists and host landholders, the Building Better Pastures field day showcased practical, on-farm solutions that support productive pastures, healthier soils and resilient grazing businesses.
